Historical Spotlight: Baseball in Cape May and Atlantic Counties
On this day in 1996, Major League Baseball approved interleague play, allowing American and National League teams to compete during the regular season. Cape May and Atlantic Counties have a rich baseball history, particularly within the African American community during the era of segregated leagues.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cape May was a popular destination for both tourists and baseball teams. Notably, the Cape May Giants, an African American team, played games that attracted both locals and visitors. These games were more than just sporting events; they were significant social gatherings that showcased the talent and determination of Black athletes during a time of widespread segregation.
In Atlantic City, the Bacharach Giants were a prominent Negro League team in the 1920s and 1930s. They played at the Kentucky Avenue and Baltic Avenue ballpark, drawing large crowds and contributing to the city's vibrant cultural scene. The team's success helped pave the way for the eventual integration of baseball.
In recent years, efforts have been made to honor this legacy. For instance, in October 2021, Cape May hosted a three-day conference titled "Out of the Shadows...Into the Light," focusing on South Jersey and Philadelphia's rich history of Negro Leagues ball clubs and their impact on baseball heritage. The event featured authors and historians who presented accounts of Black ballplayers who starred on the region's teams, including the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants and the Cape May Giants.
